Emergency Water Heater Tips
We do not recommend trying to take care of a water heater if one is unsure precisely what one should do! It is an extremely unsafe device. Our team is highly trained with performing water heater repairs. If one was to attempt any repairs, shut off the power if you’re handling an electric water heater, and the gas for gas water heaters first!
If the water heater tank is leaking water, shut the water off leading to the tank. It should be a gate-style valve or a ball-style stuff off valve. The ball-style will turn 180 degrees and a gate-style needs to be turned clockwise up until it cannot be turned anymore. Occasionally these valves break. If that is the condition, or if it does not turn, turn off the water to the household. Once you complete turning the water valve off, know that it still could leak. To avoid this from happening, attach a hose to the drain at the bottom of the storage tank and extend it to either a rain gutter drain or a sink to empty the tank when able. Once the water is successfully switched off and draining, turn the power or gas off to the heater. If gas is smelled, turn the gas off leading to the water heater immediately! If the smell of gas is still evident once the gas line is switched off, be sure to call the gas company to see where the gas leak is coming from.
